Trivia: Whose Baseball Card is displayed at CIA HQ?

When baseball greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig went on tour in baseball-crazy Japan in 1934, some fans wondered why a third-string catcher named Moe Berg was included. Although he played with 5 major league teams from 1923 to 1939, he was a mediocre ball player.

Casey Stengel once said: That is the strangest man ever to play baseball. When all the baseball stars went to Japan, Moe Berg went with them and many people wondered why he went with the team. Moe spoke 15 languages including Japanese.

    1. He was one of those rare people who could have existed, achieved, and done remarkable things in his own era. He would have been lost from a professional sense, in the present.

Think of Moe operating today...Barack would get wind of him achieving against ISIL and would dime him off so that he could be burned to death or beheaded.

    2. Surely you're not implying that Barack is some kind of leftist traitor?

    3. The Manchurian Candidate? Perish the thought. If I implied that I'd be an Islamophobic, homophobic, racist.

  2. I have read about and posted about Mo. He was an amazing man who even dresses as a woman to get information. A great spy - but no movie about him.

  5. Aside from his real work, I always marvel at how "mediocre" guys eek out careers - PLAYING A GAME. I would love to play a game for a living (which I do for a part of my job anyway…)

    1. I would have added that last sentence if you hadn't. Didn't Shakespeare say that "All the world's a stage and we are merely actors on it?"

Some games are games (fair competition) and some games are rackets (rigged outcomes). It's important to know which game you're playing and what that really means.
