Arms to Taiwan

The US State Department has approved a $2.2 billion arms sale package to Taiwan. The justification for selling weapons to Taiwan is that the Nationalist Chinese Government doesn't want to fall to the Communist Chinese Government, lurking across the Straits of Formosa as it has since the end of the Second World War.

The People's Republic is unhappy about efforts to defend Taiwan against their aggression.

This pending arms sale package adds another major obstacle to US relations with China. But there are a few stones in the Chinese shoe. One item is the trade tariff war. A second is the pending extradition from Canada of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou. A third is the US ban on importing 5G network technology from Huawei. A fourth is Chinese purchases of Iranian oil in defiance of sanctions. A fifth issue is freedom of navigation in the Formosa Strait and the South China Sea. Another is the impact of Belt and Road Initiative agreements on the economic health of participating countries. This is the seventh stone (if you're counting).

The view from Beijing is that the US is coordinating and implementing a comprehensive strategy to prevent China from becoming what President Xi said in 2017 is a nation with leading global influence by 2050.

    Thanks for the update, LL.

  7. Some things never change ! Mid 50's. 7 th fleet destroyers would spend a month or more on Formosa patrol where we would watch shelling of Matsu and Qumoy (sp) from Mainland China at night. China referred to us (correctly) as Paper Tigers.
