News in a Nutshell

It Won't be a Spring of Recovery

The jobs numbers look grim even taking into account that it's January and all of those good jobs numbers (part time hirings for the holidays) vanished. It's interesting that Vice President Joe (The Jobs Czar) Biden is silent on the matter.
(Associated Press/Fox News) The Labor Department says weekly applications for unemployment benefits leapt 38,000 to a seasonally adjusted 368,000. The increase comes after applications plummeted in the previous two weeks to five-year lows. Even with the adjustment, it's still the second lowest since the Great Depression.
The Obama economy sank into negative territory for the first time since the last recession but don't worry, it didn't get reported by any of the mainstream media outlets -- so did it really happen?

Oil for China

On January 18, President Obama spiked the Keystone (oil) Pipeline from Canada to the US, which would have netted tens of thousands of jobs and would have helped the US to free itself from volatile oil supplies in the Middle East. The Canadians, not particularly bothered, are not building the pipeline to the Pacific Coast where the oil will be shipped to China to support their economy - protecting it from volatile oil supplies in the Middle East.

Geraldo Rivera to Run for US Senate

Well why not? Could he be worse than what we have in the US Senate now?
(Fox Latino)“I mention this only briefly, fasten your seatbelt,” Rivera said on his radio show. “I mentioned this only briefly to my wife ... but I am and I’ve been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker.”

Sly Stallone returns in 'Bullet to the Head'

Sylvester Stallone is a hitman with a score to settle in the latest Hollywood blockbuster, 'Bullet to the Head'.  Hollywood continues to maintain that their portrayal of firearms violence does not contribute to the problem of firearms violence that the liberals continually crow about.

The Economy Continues to Tank

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) explains why this is happening.
(IBD) In the wake of Wednesday's news that the economy contracted slightly in the last three months of 2012, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid laid the blame on budget cuts.
The only way to get out of a sluggish economy is to go farther in debt. Senator Reid proposed a federal spending increase of 2% (printed money with no backing - nobody loans us money anymore).

Not quite, Harry. According to monthly spending data from the Treasury Dept., total federal spending — which includes transfer payments and other federal outlays not counted by the BEA — increased by $98 billion in Q4 compared with Q3. And spending was up $31 billion when compared with Q4 2011.

For the entire year, spending in 2012 was virtually unchanged from 2011, and was up $86 billion over 2010, a year when the government was still spending stimulus money in earnest.

Yes. It's all very depressing.

Cheaper to Lock them up or let them go?

The Congressional Research Service reported, "Since the early 1980s, there has been a historically unprecedented increase in the federal prison population."
"The number of inmates under the Bureau of Prisons' (BOP) jurisdiction has increased from approximately 25,000 in FY1980 to nearly 219,000 in FY2012. Since FY1980, the federal prison population has increased, on average, by approximately 6,100 inmates each year...the largest portion of newly admitted inmates are being incarcerated for drug offenses."
Rising costs, overcrowding and deteriorating prison infrastructure are becoming a real problem at BOP. And with the federal budget (we haven't actually had a Congressional Budget since 2009, but if we had one) stretched to the limits --  Should we embark on a new and vastly expensive prison expansion program when we can't maintain the Navy's ships and we're deficit spending two trillion dollars each year over and above what we take in?

Minimum sentencing guidelines for many federal crimes mean that  the population will continue to grow at a steady -- and unprecedented rate.

Do policy makers care? Apparently they don't.

According to the Federal Register, the average cost of incarceration in 2009 (latest figures) was $25,251.00 per prisoner per year.

There are about 47,000,000 Americans receiving USDA Food Stamps at a cost to the taxpayer of roughly $80,000,000,000. If you do the math, you'll agree with me that it's cheaper to keep somebody on food stamps than it is to keep them locked in prison. But SNAP (food stamps) doesn't include or take into account welfare benefits, SDI, subsidized housing, AFDC, Medicaid, Child Care Subsidies, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program). If you were to lump all of those together, you might be uncomfortably close to the incarceration number.

When you have to wonder whether it's cheaper to keep them locked up or to release them in an environment where they are unlikely to get a job -- thus putting them on the dole -- you have reached a tipping point, my friends.

First, five year old children point their fingers and they are suspended from school for "simulating firearms". (LINK HERE)

And there was the five year old girl that discussed her Hello Kitty bubble gun in school -- and was suspended.

Now there is a little girl of six who tore out a piece of paper that looked either like an L or a pistol (who knows?) and is censured.

And a little boy of five years made a Lego handgun in an after school program - he's been slapped with a warning, threatening of a two week suspension. (Fox News)

Boston News, Weather, Sports | FOX 25 | MyFoxBoston

The video is comprehensive.

When does the government plan to censure video game designers and Hollywood movie makers? Never, they contribute to the Democratic Party. They can be as outrageous as they want to be, glorifying gratuitous violence and murder and "progressives" feel that's fine because it's not a five year old child discussing a bubble gun, pointing a finger, tearing something out of paper or making a Lego pistol.

Has our society completely lost its ever-loving MIND?

Meanwhile, in Chicago and Washington DC - homes of Obama, crime victims are stacked up like so much cordwood in those places in America with the toughest gun laws.

Meanwhile, in middle America where everyone is armed to the teeth, legally, that sort of horrible crime is unknown.

I refer you to Liberatarian Advocate's blog post today. Firearms violence isn't about firearms ownership. It's about a society in decay. But progressives push that decay as the core value of their agenda.

Firearms Alternatives

With the current rush to ban, it may be time to rethink self defense weapons.

The Austrian Windbüchse may be the place to start. The best example of the Windbüchse class of weapons is the Girandoni Air Rifle, of the sort carried by Lewis and Clark in their expedition to survey the Louisiana Purchase. The rifle fired a .46 caliber ball at about the same velocity as a 230 grain .45 ACP round. Though the technology available to people in 1780 was limited, it's not today. You could fire a modern version at full-auto and not be in violation of any law. has come up with their entry into the market

.22 caliber
24″ Rifled Barrel
Uses common paintball tank (Nitrogen or HPA only, no CO2)
Gas remote-line ready
Fires lead pellets or lead round balls
600+ FPS with 16gr lead ball
50 round removable mag
Full or semi operation
Non-cycling charge lever
Ejected reusable shell casings
Completely ambidextrous
4 picatinny rail mount locations
7 pounds unloaded
Full-steel receiverI

Here is another entry into the market.

And this one:

These aren't subject to any sort of gun control -- and may be the way of the future.

This one shoots a .357 projectile:

Then there is the .50 Caliber Dragon's Claw

Or maybe a high powered electrically fired nail gun?

Allow Women to be Slaughtered

Hamburger Hill - Viet Nam
Women are angry that they couldn't have joined in the
Old NFO's post set me off on a train of thought and I need to flesh it out here just for my own self expression.

For a very long time, men have put women on pedestals. At least my generation did. I know that being in my 50's now, I'm past being 'hip' and 'trendy'. The flip side is that I've seen things that have allowed me to form an opinion. Liberals will howl that it's not valid -- but I will express it all the same at the risk of being politically incorrect.

Women feel that more of their gender should have
occupied these coffins. Now they'll get their chance.
Many women are angry because they feel that men have it good and they've somehow ended up on the bad side of the equation. Now they want to go into combat. I don't know why anyone would want to do that. I've been there and saying that it's ugly and horrible doesn't begin to describe it. One of the worst parts about taking lives is living to go home afterward because you're stuck with the things you've seen and the things that you did. Oft times you are stuck with the prohibition (classified information) of telling ANYONE about it. You can't get it off your chest. You simply live with it and die with the secrets.

In the book (offered for sale - left), WHITE POWDER: A Novel of the CIA and the Secret War in Laos, a character discusses his feelings on the matter. Keep in mind that it's only fiction:
Sam Willoughby continued, “I’m jealous of dead soldiers. Dead soldiers have friends to avenge them and family to mourn them. They lie peacefully in neat graves, their bravery and sacrifice noted; buried in smart uniform, medals in velvet boxes, citations to hang on the walls and a folded flag in a cupboard somewhere. They said what they had done and where they had been, and when they died, their friends told how they died, and, from time to time, why they died.”

He motioned toward the glass of pénard Burton held. He handed it to Willoughby, who sloshed it in his mouth and then downed it in a single gulp.

“In the parlance of dead soldiers there is the front line. In the cant of my strange craft we call that place ‘the end of line.’ People in my business die alone. Our deaths are unsung, our motives unclear. So we die slowly. Every challenged moment of each belabored day is barbed and thorned with memory of the things we cannot tell. We die defenseless with naught to avenge us but the mute records of what we observed in the strange lands that swallowed us.”
In the US, women have been denied this horror. Now, they've won that equal right. I suppose that congratulations are in order.

But slaughter isn't a new concept for many women. Maybe this is what they've been pining for all along.

Between 1882 and 1968, 3,500 African Americans were lynched. It's a very sore spot in the African American community because it was an assault on one race by another. It should be a sore spot. It should be decried. --However-- The inconvenient truth is that African American women abort 3,500 babies every 72 hours in America. Slaughter or 'my body-my choice'? I leave it for you, the reader to decide and slice it any way that your conscience allows you to do it.

Women should now be compelled to register for selective service and should be selected for combat whether they feel that they are personally ready or not -- because, trust me, men never are either. And if they don't like it, they can complain to President Obama, their liberal icon.

You can argue that the left wing progressive women who wanted this to happen will not be joining the young women on the battlefield. I can make the same argument for the old legislators (both genders) who sit home, safe, well fed, renowned for their wisdom, who have sent countless young men to their deaths in wars that meant ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING. In Viet Nam, Americans died for NOTHING. In Iraq, Americans died so that Iraqis could join a jihad and try to kill them. Net result: NOTHING. In Afghanistan it's worse because no Afghans flew airplanes into the World Trade Center, but we needed to attack somebody and the Saudis were our allies. Does anyone think that the billions in treasure that we spent in that sewer that is Afghanistan will amount to anything? Are those lives cut short and those families destroyed back home going to find any solace or vindication in the deaths of those that they loved? NO.

Yes, maybe it's time for women to share in this.

ObamaCare for Dummies

Obama Care Survival Guide: The Affordable Care Act and What It Means for You and Your Healthcare (available on
When President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, he handed Americans one of the most sweeping pieces of social legislation in U.S. history.
Available from for $11.97
in paperback or $7.69 on Kindle.
Author, Nicholas J. Tate brings the American people the "ObamaCare for Dummies" book that helps cut to the chase on the Affordable Care Act of 2010 -- the 2,700 page legislative bill that Congress passed without reading.

This book serves as a valuable resource for those currently insured, those who are not, and the tens of millions of seniors, youth, business people and others who will be affected by the new law. The ObamaCare Survival Guide reveals:
  • How the currently insured will be affected, including rising premium costs
  • Medicare shocker: cuts in benefits, new rules
  • New protections for the uninsured
  • Hidden fees and levies
  • New taxes for the affluent
  • Small businesses, new requirements, tax credits
  • Prescription drug users: new fees
  • A timetable for each part of the healthcare plan
  • Essential benefits insurance companies must provide
  • ObamaCare’s impact on long-term care
  • Your responsibilities and penalties under the new laws
  • How to maximize your healthcare dollar on the new plan
  • The cost to you as a consumer
Sales of “ObamaCare Survival Guide” have exceeded 100,000 copies and the book now ranks No. 4 on Barnes & Noble’s list of best-sellers. It also ranks No. 4 on’s list of the best-selling books in the Politics & Government category, and No. 1 in the Health Policy category.

At 264 pages, the book provides a very simple overview of Obamacare, it is easy to read. (SPOILER ALERT) If you are looking forward to find out how to survive Obamacare, the answer from the book is that you can't. However, the devil you know is usually better than the devil that you don't. (that might have been a better title)

Any law that is passed on a holiday weekend in the middle of the night without one Republican vote in favor of the Bill where not one of the signatories have read it and had time to evaluate it -- is usually not a good thing.
Review from I read this at a Barnes and Nobel because open enrollmenet season is upon us and have noticed several trends that appear to be troublesome over the past 2 years. In short, this "guide" explains somewhat potential and current changes to health insurance and its implementation...
The 1 negative review I read indicated that if you are a right winger this book was for you and if you were a left winger forget it. Sorry, but in my opinion information is information whether you like it or not, I suffer through MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and Fox that way I can decide, not let someone else do it for me.
It's the law of the land and it's time that you were informed in detail on how that law impacts you. You won't hear it from the liberal media.

Pentagon Study Released

WASHINGTON, DC – The Pentagon recently completed a two billion dollar study conducted over the past two years, funded entirely by the Affordable Healthcare Act. Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters, "This is the crowning achievement in my lifetime of public service." The study concludes that the United States should immediately allow the handicapped, teenagers, the elderly, foreign nationals, and others the same rights to military service as able bodied American males.
“This is where we have been heading as a department for more than ten years,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters. “This will take some time, but it will happen. Not everyone is going to be a soldier, but everyone, no matter what their circumstances, is entitled to an opportunity.”
Panetta stressed that opening up opportunities in the military would not compromise military readiness or war-fighting capabilities, and believes it would actually make the force stronger. Many other groups with little military experience or vested interest agree.

Handicapped Americans National today filed suit against the Pentagon to let wheelchair-bound recruits serve in infantry units, and a group named Blind But Not Broken has pressed for Braille heads-up-displays (HUD) to be installed in all F-22 fighter jets. The Americans with Disabilities Act clearly calls for equal access to the handicapped.

The Pentagon has already loosened age and nationality restrictions on potential service-members, granting an exception which military recruiters have repeatedly pushed for. They have also opened up all military occupational specialties including special operations combat jobs to women and the trans-gendered.
“It’s all really a matter of fairness,” said Panetta to reporters, in agreement with the two groups. “There will certainly be some accommodations that need to be made, but I’m confident we can make this work. Let’s face it, we now have women on submarines and in fighter planes. Soon they’ll be infantry. But if we want real equality across our military, we need to stop injustices affecting the least fortunate among us and give everyone a shot.”
Actor James Gandolfini played Secretary Panetta in the
blockbuster hit, "Zero Dark Thirty", suggesting that an
actor could substitute for a politician at any point.
Along with hundreds of thousands of women already signing up for infantry training, wheelchair-bound recruits have been rolling into local recruiting stations, although no decision on their fate has been finalized.
“Let me be clear: the standards are not going to change. That’s not what we’re proposing here. But if this goes through, then of course we will notify the Taliban, and have them install wheelchair-accessible pressure plate IEDs, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” Panetta added.
There was some immediate push-back from "flying admirals" who felt that the study inappropriately opened up flight jobs for the disabled. Secretary Panetta calmed their fears explaining more fully what naval aviator roles really were and why the handicapped could perform those functions.
Panetta commented, "When you consider that all aviators do is to sit in a chair and push buttons, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a hoist to drop the disabled into cockpits so they could fight sitting down. And when not sitting in an ejection seat, they could do what all fighter jocks do -- sit in their wheelchairs in the wardroom, swill coffee and grouse about how tough their job is. There is no reason why even the developmentally delayed (used to be downs syndrome) couldn't perform this function. If they run into trouble out there in combat, we can always fly them home the way we do with drones."

Asymmetrical Warfare

The Term

Asymmetrical warfare* has always been difficult for large nation states to deal with. Witness the problems that Imperial Rome had coming to terms with the Spartacus Rebellion. They simmer and erupt somewhere else just when you thought that the war was won.
*The term asymmetrical warfare is used to describe what is also called guerilla warfare, insurgency, terrorism counterinsurgency, counterterrorism and in the Obama Administration - a foreign contingency operation. It's a violent conflict between a formal military and an informal, poorly equipped, but resilient opponent.
In Mexico

US Attorney and lesbian
activist Laura Duffy
In Mexico, they've had a difficult time coming to terms with "winning the cartel wars". For example: 18  months ago, President Calderon declared the La Familia Michoacan Cartel to have been completely eliminated. Today they are back stronger than ever, calling themselves Los Cabelleros Templarios (The Knights Templar). Same cartel fighters, different moniker.

At about the same time as Mexico announced that the war against a particularly nasty cartel was over, Assistant US Attorney Laura Duffy - a hard core Democrat intent on moving up, ran the Arellano Felix Organization Task Force. In order to move up from Assistant US Attorney to Obama appointee US Attorney for the Southern District of California, she had to move out of her task force job. The only way to do that was to disband the task force, declaring that the Arellano Felix Organization (AFO) had been vanquished. She got the big job and I personally think that she's a good US Attorney, however, today, AFO is bigger than it has ever been, spanning the Mexico/US Border from the Pacific Ocean through New Mexico.

Radical Islam

Presidential hopeful and lesbian
activist Hillary Clinton
The same problem exists with radical islam that exists in Mexico. Secretary of State and US Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is trying to cast the Benghazi albatross from around her neck as she stakes out her strategy to be president in 2016.

For all of the hopeful political hay that President Obama wanted to rake in on his giant success in Libya and for sending the Navy to kill Osama bin Laden --- and for all of the political hay that Secretary Hillary Clinton wanted to make of her success with the so-called Arab Spring (2012), Al Qaida isn't dead. And it won't die until radical Islam is dealt with at its roots. After 9/11 we couldn't very well have invaded our ally, Saudi Arabia. So we picked on Afghanistan.  The war in Afghanistan has done NOTHING what so ever to deal with the problem that is radical Islam.

In a larger sense, the quasi Islamic Obama would like to bring Islam closer to he breast. It doesn't work because a hand will reach out and stab him with a knife if he does that.**
** Inconvenient Truth

In the US Military, Special Operations - Low Intensity Conflict (SOLIC) has been a buzzword for decades now. The concept began in Viet Nam in the early 1960's resting on the shoulders of the American experience with the Office of Strategic Services***
***From September 20, 1945, the functions of the OSS were split between the Department of State and the Department of War. The State Department received the Research and Analysis Branch of OSS which was renamed the Interim Research and Intelligence Service or (IRIS). Today it's called the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
The War Department took over the Secret Intelligence Branch and the Counterespionage Branch. In January 1946, President Truman created the Central Intelligence Group (CIG) which was the direct precursor to the CIA.
I don't think that it's fair to characterize it as a "problem", but the CIA (including the Special Activities Division) has been hamstrung from operating against radical Islam because of pressure from inside the Beltway. Thus the War on Terror was transformed into a more benign 'foreign contingency operation'. Yes, the drone strikes continued, but the ground game was vastly reduced.

Asymmetrical Warfare Requires a Ground Game

Unfortunately for the United States, effectiveness in this environment requires people on the ground. The CIA (despite portrayals in popular media) is loath to do this because it constitutes risk. And the CIA in 2013 (unlike the OSS before it) is incredibly risk averse. The military is largely ineffective in dealing with radical islam except where small unit actions such as the direct action mission against the bin Laden compound are required.

The Future

Politicians will be declaring victory over - and over - and over - and over - in these low intensity conflict situations. Whether it's the Mexicans, the Americans or the Indonesians in East Timor, it can't be solved from office suites while minimizing risk. Neither can it be solved by lying to yourself and to your people about how well you're doing. Politicians are in charge of these things and they seem incapable of doing much right. That's why the US is headed for a $20 trillion dollar deficit by 2016. Nobody wants to face a problem head on.

Pat Condell weighs in on the issue of Islam, glorious martyrs, honor murders, etc.

January 2013 - a very progressive month

The month is not over, but I'm ready for it to be. This is your January 2013 Progressive Wrap-Up

Green Al Gore sold Current TV to Al Jazeera for an undisclosed amount. Based on what the people who are in the know are saying it's on the order of somebody paying you 50 grand for your wife's 2001 Ford Escort with 200k on the clock. The catch is the wife comes with the deal -- and so it goes with Al.

Al grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and hasn't ever had definable scruples or principles. He fashioned himself as the face of global warming and as an enemy of earth-destroying fossil fuels. He won a Nobel Prize for his stance and when the price was right, he sold out to big oil. All of the progressive toadies who swallowed his lies were tossed like so much limp salad into the dumpster of life and one can expect that they're looking for jobs at Media Matters or some equally progressive sewer.

2016 Presidential Hopeful, Hillary Clinton didn't have any recollection at all about what happened at Benghazi either before the State Department people and CIA contractors  (former Navy SEALs) were killed or after. If you'll recall Secretary Clinton claimed that despite the flood of information that she viewed to the contrary, she blamed an obscure video that nobody in the Middle East had seen. To Secretary Clinton, it was a mob responding to justifiably outrageous behavior by an unknown American citizen rather than a coordinated and combined arms terrorist attack on a US Consulate. Even though questioned sharply by the US Senate, Secretary Clinton (age 65) has been recovering from a recent concussion that can result in memory loss.

She wept openly at the microphone for the cameras and those Senatorial colleagues who were disposed to be gulled.  While Al Gore (above) may have won a Nobel Prize for doing essentially nothing but scam the green movement, Hillary Clinton may be nominated for an Emmy for her work in daytime television.

General Colin Powell backs Barack Obama because he is part negro; He wants every gun in America registered; At the same time, finds it "abominable" to require voters to have a photo ID to prove their identity. General Powell has become the darling of the progressive movement, trying to make himself valid politically once again -- the lion in winter. And he still calls himself "a Republican". Riddle me that one.

He is angling for a position as "special advisor to the president" but it's not going to work because dear Colin is not from Chicago and he doesn't have the Alinsky street creds for the position.

Newly Re-Anointed Barack Obama declared that there is no real liberty without big government. (A code-word for Orwell's 1984: "Freedom Is Slavery.")

Obama says he's all for entrepreneurs, Grandma and her apple pie, but "a free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play." He ignores the millions of victims of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the monstrous public-private hybrids designed by government with rules to suffocate competition and fair play among banks in the name of redistributing income via residential real estate.

Our newly re-minted Chief Executive reaffirmed that executive branch has no intention over the next four years of reforming — or, more correctly, saving from bankruptcy — our wasteful entitlement programs. Indeed, ObamaCare is a huge new entitlement heaved on to the taxpayers' backs. In his progressively correct inauguration address made it abundantly clear he is nowhere near to being finished pursuing collectivism in the name of individual freedom.

Working hard not to allow a crisis to go to waste, the progressive left has worked diligently to eliminate the Bill of Rights to the extent possible with just one Newtown, Connecticut school shooting crisis, that could never have been averted by firearms control legislation.

Summary for January 2013

The nation is sharply divided between the progressive socialists and the constitutionalists. At the moment, the Constitution hangs by a thread.

Joe Biden 2016

I know that it's early, but I'm declaring for Joe Biden (Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr.) to be the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 2016. Am I going out on a limb?  NO! Biden is the man.

We need to run down what he did in his first four years in office to demonstrate why he is particularly qualified to be the President of the United States and Leader of the Free World. He'll be 74 years old in 2016, but I'm sure that he'd be run against the Republican Party's nominee to serve another four years for the good of the country.

Joe (Don't Mess with Joe) Biden:

* Jobs Czar - 2009-2012

* Firearms Regulation Czar 2013

* Poland Disarmament Coordinator

* Summer of Recovery Czar 2009-2012

* Arab Summer Coordinator (supervising Secretary Hillary Clinton) 2012

* ObamaCare Facilitator

* Allowing homosexuals to be openly gay in the military by working to repeal DADT

We're looking for another four years of stellar achievements that should push Joe Biden into the race for the White House as the Democratic Party's choice to face a weak and ineffective Republican Party challenger.

If you think that Obama was both liberal and progressive, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that Joe Biden will eclipse President Obama's record.

Finally - A Rational Case for Firearms Confiscation

Fidel Castro, Cuban Dictator-for-Life
Fidel Castro made his victorious post-revolution entry into Havana, Cuba on January 8, 1959. The next day, Castro's regime began collecting guns and disarming the population "for their own good". Fidel characterized himself as a father to the Cuban people. A loving father only wants what is best for his children and it is from the wellsprings of those concerns that he began a systematic confiscation of firearms.

You an read more here (LINK)
I appeal to the public to disarm the ambitious. Why are clandestine arms being stored at this very minute? Why are arms being hidden at distinct points of the capital? Why are arms being smuggled at this moment? I tell you that there are members of certain revolutionary organizations who are smuggling and storing arms. All the arms that were found by the rebel army are stored and locked in barracks, where they belong. What are these arms for? Against whom are they going to be used?
Against the revolutionary government that has the support of all the people? Do we have a dictatorship here? Are we going to take up arms against a free government that respects the rights of the people? We have a free country here. We have no censorship, and the press is free. The people can gather freely if they want to. There is no tormenting of political prisoners, no murders, no terror. When all the rights of the citizens have been restored--and an election for the purpose is going to be held as soon as possible--why do we need arms? Are we going to unseat the President with the arms? Are we going to set up revolutionary organizations? Are we going to have gangsters?
Are we going to practice daily shooting on the streets of the capital? Why do we need arms? Yet I tell you here and now that two days ago elements of certain organizations broke into the San Antonio barracks, which are under the jurisdiction of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos and also under my jurisdiction as commander in chief of the armed forces, and carried away 500 small arms, (16?) machine guns, and 80,000 cartridges. I wanted to tell you about this and make use of the influence exerted by public opinion so that those who are planning any criminal adventure will not be able to recruit any troops to follow them. The theft of the weapons cannot be justified, because this is not a dictatorship. We are never going to use force, because we belong to the people. Moreover, the day that the people do not want us we shall leave. As soon as possible I will take the rifles off the streets. There are no more enemies, there is no longer anything to fight against, and if some day any foreigner or any movement comes up against the revolution, all the people will fight. The weapons belong in the barracks. No one has the right to have private armies here.

Governments that disarm their people always
use the argument that it's for the greater good.

A few days after the firearms confiscation had been completed, Castro began to execute political enemies. As father to the Cuban people, his enemies were naturally...their enemies, and the enemies of his patron, Soviet Russia.

The Progressive Movement, Reimagined

Quentin Tarantino - Progressive Poster Child

Writer/Director Quentin Tarantino glorifies senseless violence
and racism and is held in high regard by Hollywood
Progressives who decry firearm violence and racism.
When Quentin Tarantino, famous Hollywood liberal, wrote the film Django Unchained, he included the word “nigger” liberally in the lines that he prepared for both the white and black actors.
"Tarantino is almost fifty years old now and he hasn’t really had a hit like Pulp Fiction since Pulp Fiction so in his new movie, starring Jamie Foxx – who is black – uses the word “nigger” over 100 times and throws in some lines about killing white people."
I have no intention of spending time or money viewing his film, so I have to take the Hollywood Reporter's word for the fact that nearly every other word out of actor Jamie Foxx's filthy sewer mouth was, "nigger." However, it wasn't black Foxx that wrote the script. It was white man Tarantino.

I don't personally care that the 'inflammatory word' is used or unused in a movie. I'm not offended by its use. Then again, I don't belong to a racial group where it applies.  I frankly don't use the terms and they don't matter to me. But progressives care a lot about these things, which is why they feel that they should glorify firearms violence and racism in movies - and by so doing, to promote firearms violence and racism. If the logic escapes you, chalk it up to the Progressive Movement Reimagined.

Tarantino responds to violence and racism in his politically and progressively correct film, Django Unchained. Note his willingness to share his philosophical high ground and erudite underpinnings for his production.

Guns in Schools - Progressives on the Move!

The Problem

When I was a kid there were squirt gun epidemics every spring. Every student in elementary, junior high and high school came equipped to squirt water at each other and at the same time, annoy teachers.

The Remedy

Teachers confiscated squirt guns. (and students found ways to liberate the contraband squirters and put them back into circulation). School kids weren't expelled. They were not forced to undergo psychological testing or biological probing in an effort to determine what caused them to bring a squirt gun to school.

Progressives Respond

Today these sorts of things that won't even put an eye out, are now consistent with terrorism in America.

(Michelle Malkin) A 5-year-old girl was suspended from school earlier this week after she made what the school called a “terrorist threat.”
Her weapon of choice? A small, Hello Kitty automatic bubble blower.
The kindergartner, who attends Mount Carmel Area Elementary School in Pennsylvania, caught administrators’ attention after suggesting she and a classmate should shoot each other with bubbles.
“I think people know how harmless a bubble is. It doesn’t hurt,” said Robin Ficker, an attorney for the girl’s family. According to Ficker, the girl, whose identity has not been released, didn’t even have the bubble gun toy with her at school.
The kindergartner was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation during her 10-day suspension, which was later reduced to two days. The evaluation deemed the girl normal and not a threat to others, Ficker said.
The girl’s family is considering a lawsuit against the school to get the blemish – all because of bubbles – off their daughter’s record.
“The mother has tried to get the girl in another school since this time, and they won’t take the little girl because of this mark on her record,” Ficker said.
I'm frankly surprised that the school didn't brand the five year old girl's face with the scarlet letters, HK (Hello Kitty), as an enduring symbol to all that her crime needs to follow her through life.

Progressives Expand their Search for the Guilty
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton threatens to murder us all.

TALBOT COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — Is it child’s play or a serious threat of gun violence? For the second time in less than a month, a Maryland child has been kicked out of school for using his finger in the shape of a gun. There’s controversy at a Talbot County school after two 6-year-old boys were suspended while playing cops and robbers during recess and using their fingers to make an imaginary gun.

This is the second time a Maryland child has been suspended for such play. Earlier this month, 6-year-old Rodney Lynch was suspended from his Montgomery County school after pretending to fire an imaginary gun more than once.
Why is Hillary Clinton free? Note that her finger is tilted to the side displaying the deadly "ghetto kill shot technique" as she threatens to murder all Americans (see photo above). She pointed at us through the television screen.  She's going to do a Benghazi on us all! Has anyone registered her finger? It's time to confiscate that finger surgically and hold it as evidence of her genocidal intentions. Using school board logic, that's what would have to happen.
President Obama demonstrates his lethal technique.
A Progressive Wet Dream

Neither pointed fingers nor Hello Kitty Bubble Blowers are protected by the Bill of Rights/US Constitution, so liberal educators are having a field day in their relentless persecution of children who might some day be disposed to own firearms. Never mind that none of the suspects accused of pointing fingers or discussing bubble blowers (that were never brought onto school property) are five and six years old, respectively. Persecution of small children can't begin too soon if they're suspected of "conservative leanings".

Where do school districts find such morons -- to act as role models and to teach America's youth?  Is this the sort of educated leader that our university systems are churning out?

A new threat to school children? Note that neither the
cartoon kitty nor the bunny have fingers to point with...

Disarming America (historical)

Some say that we can trust the government. Historically that path has been trod and the results have usually been met with frustration (to be kind about it). Today President Obama begins his second term in office. Mr. Obama demonstrated during his first term in office that he and his selected coterie of officials are short on the truth and long on lies.

Do you trust Mr. Obama? Do you trust your government to see to your best interests? Though it's been 122 years since the last Indian Battle (outlined below), that has since been accepted as a massacre of mostly women and children -- if we don't read and regard history, we will repeat it.

This 'battle' was a firearms seizure - that escalated. Make of it what you will.

The historical dealings between the USGOV and the Indian Nations was one of broken promises. I'm sure that USGOV kept its word at times -- but those brief moments were fleeting as subsequent administrations chose to ignore treaties. In the latter 1880's, the Lakota Souix were victims of this policy as 'their turn came'. The buffalo herds had been hunted to extinction by the encroaching settlers and non-Indian hunters. Treaty promises to feed, house, clothe and protect the Souix on the reservation were not honored. By the winter of 1890, the small remnant of the Lakota Souix were near starvation. Most of the men had been killed and the tribe consisted primarily of women and children. (h/t John Coffey for reminding me of this event)

The Event

Spotted Elk's band consisted of Miniconjou Lakota and Hunkpapa Lakota. Though they were on the reservation, their situation had become precarious because of their lack of food and shelter. So they were on the move, not to leave the reservation, but to try and find a place to make a winter camp. The US 7th Cavalry Regiment intercepted them on December 28, 1890 and brought up reinforcements so that by the evening of that day, all 500 soldiers of the regiment were present at Wounded Knee Creek where the Indians made their camp.

The US Army and accompanying Federal Agents decided that it was in the Indian's best interests to disarm them for 'their own safety and protection'. At daybreak on December 29, the cavalry surrounded the 230 women and children and 120 men of Spotted Elk's band. The US Army brought 4 Hotchkiss rapid fire howitzers with them and set them up around the Indians in addition to the heavily armed soldiers.
The 1.65-inch (42 mm) gun and accessories could be packed on two mules. The gun was introduced as a modern replacement for the aging twelve-pound mountain howitzer. At Wounded Knee, they were loaded with grape shot (think of a shotgun loaded with a hundred one-inch ball bearings and you get the picture).
Col. Forsyth ordered the surrender of weapons and the immediate removal and transportation of the Indians from the "zone of military operations" to awaiting trains. They were to be removed from their reservation (given them by treaty). The army searched the camp and found 38 rifles. More rifles were taken as the soldiers searched the Indians. None of the old men were found to be armed.

Keep in mind that the rifles were the tribe's only way to feed themselves even though by this time there was no game remaining.

Tension mounted as Black Coyote, one of the Lakota men refused to give up his rifle; he was deaf and had not understood the order. Another Indian said: "Black Coyote is deaf." (Meaning that he did not speak English). When the soldier refused to heed his warning, he said, "Stop! He cannot hear your orders!" At that moment, two soldiers seized Black Coyote from behind, and in the struggle (allegedly), his rifle discharged. At the same moment Yellow Bird a medicine man threw some dust into the air, and approximately five young Lakota men with concealed weapons threw aside their blankets and fired their rifles at Troop K of the 7th. The Army cut them all down.

Around 40 members of the 7th Cavalry were killed, over half cut down by friendly fire from the Hotchkiss guns of their overzealous comrades-in-arms. Twenty members of the 7th Cavalry were deemed "National Heros" and awarded the Medal of Honor for the murder of 297 disarmed people -- mostly women and children. The Army needed to SPIN THE SITUATION and the best way to do it was to characterize it as a desperate fight. The media swallowed the lies and approved of the firearms seizure. After all, they were Indians (under the Army's protection).
The Lesson

Today, the Bill of Rights which includes the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is on the table. If that right is removed, it will be taken away "for our safety and protection". Do you trust your government to protect you?

ObamaCare Strikes the Campus

ObamaCare - The Reality
You will all recall that there was no legislative debate over the Affordable Care Act. Congress passed it without a single Republican vote and academia cheered their victory. For many academics, Obamacare brought with it nasty side effects
A new piece in the Wall Street Journal reports that many colleges are cutting back on the number of hours worked by adjunct professors, in order to avoid new requirements that they provide healthcare to anyone working over 30 hours per week. This is terrible news for a lot of people; 70 percent of professors work as adjuncts and many will now have to cope with a major pay cut just as requirements that they buy their own health insurance go into effect.
Universities nationwide are cutting adjunct professor hours to a maximum of 29 (which often means a cut in pay). These same people will become responsible for paying their own healthcare or pay a  tax.

There is a bright side if you're an out-of-work
academic looking for part time work.

(Walter Russell Mead) Partisans of the blue social model like to think of academia as a utopian commonwealth; academic adjuncts know the truth, and the revolting treatment of adjuncts by colleges understandably anxious to avoid the high costs of Obamacare should remind us all that the blue social model, especially in decline, is not as benign as its supporters and beneficiaries believe.

Broken City (Movie Review)

I went to see Broken City last night. This is what I thought of the movie.

Tag Line: In a city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart seeks redemption and revenge after being double-crossed and then framed by its most powerful figure: Mayor Nicholas Hostetler.

The acting was first-rate and the cast is comprised of a number of A-List actors: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones -- and Alona Tal, who I felt added a great deal to the film even though she wasn't a marquee name. If I'd been casting the film, I would not have cast Jeffrey Wright in his role, but that's just me -- unless you were going to set the film in a different period. Then maybe he would have worked. He was too wooden as he tried to play the role of a tough police chief.

The writing was not bad, but you could predict the ending five minutes into the movie. That's not necessarily bad if the acting makes up for it -- and in this case, it did. Had the movie been set in the 1950's or 1960's, the script might have worked better. I won't suggest spoilers here. Most of them are subtle and are fleshed out in the last ten minutes of the movie. None of them really matter to the story telling - they are all devices the writer used to suggest why things happened. I don't think that they worked. Brian Tucker may have gone to USC Film School because it looked like that sort of machine-writing style.

My recommendation is 6/10. The acting is engaging and I didn't look at my watch once during the film to try and figure out how much longer it would go on. Though that may sound like a rough criteria for See/Don't See -- you'd be surprised how many films have me doing that.

Acting - Very Good

Writing - Tepid

Directing - Average

---a bit more for those who want to read on--
  • Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg did the sort of acting job that I've come to expect. They were very good.
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones has been less than stunning in recent roles, but she redeemed herself here. Maybe she's gone back to acting? In any case, it was a welcome change from her recent work.
  • Barry Pepper is a favorite of mine, but in his role as the rich boy (yet man of the people) homosexual city councilman, Jack Valliant, I found him lacking. It's not that he can't act. This simply wasn't a believable role to me.
  • Kyle Chandler is a good actor, but we didn't see that much of him in the film. What I did see, I liked.

Passing Time in the Workplace

My life in the workplace has been frequently marked by practical jokes. While they are politically incorrect, there are scattered groups of adult heterosexual males that are still around where pulling off a good one is appreciated. If you work around politically correct stuffed shirts - they work much better. Target selection is critical.

(1) Sliming. Slide a few condoms into the suit jacket pockets of the most Christian (fully washed in the blood of the Lamb) male colleague that you work with. It's better if they are in an executive management position because they will have less of a sense of humor, thus the prank is more effective and the red-faced, spitting anger they come back to work with is more satisfying.
I can't explain it, but their wives would seem to be the most suspicious of the lot. Imagine a woman going through your suit jacket and finding two unused condoms and one used (with a little hand lotion in the reservoir tip). (Wipe your fingerprints from the condom packages before inserting them into the jacket pocket.)
HINT-- It works even better with lesbians...
(2) Photo Substitution. There is a practice (officially frowned upon) of taking credentials out of suit pockets and gluing a photo of a person of a more swarthy race over the photo of the authorized bearer. The practice, known as "jigging" pre-dated the movie, Midnight Run, where Robert DiNero carried and misused the credentials of a black FBI Special Agent named Alonzo Mosley (Yafette Koto). This practice works better if you are pranking people from an agency of the government other than your own.
People very seldom inspect their own creds. They display them on official business and the reaction is always gratifying.
(3) Promotion Party Planning. Frequently everyone knows that somebody will be promoted before they are. The "secret" is an open secret. However, most organizational leaders feel that they are not transparent. Therefore, follow these steps:
  • Go to a printing shop and have business cards, memo stationary and whatever else may be appropriate printed showing the name of the anointed one with their 'future rank/position' one ABOVE where they are ascending. Use the telephone number of the person promoting them on the business cards/desktop stationary.
  • Send the gifts to the TITLE, not to the person. So if you're sending them to an FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge, Simply ASAC, FCI, FBI - Norfolk 150 Corporate Blvd, Norfolk, VA Therefore the person promoting the person of interest will receive the goodies.
The reaction will be immediate and satisfying.
Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and
Firearms HQ
Ground-Zero for pranking other agencies.
HINT-- Straw Man Deflection: It's often useful to set up a third party as the prankster because the search for the guilty party will be relentless. Pick somebody from the office who has recently returned from a conference or meeting and send the "package" from that location. (It's much easier to do if you have a friend in the post office/Postal Inspection Service.) Take a copy of the packing receipt for the purchase and put it in the third party's office trash. The third party won't know that it's there and it provides "proof" to the offended one on the warpath.
(4) The Wicked Dancer. Strip clubs are dens of iniquity and only perverts go there. However, wives and girlfriends don't know that you (their loved one) are not a pervert, so this works. (See #1 above) It works better on the uber religious but there is universal application. Drop by and pick up a few business cards to "Juicy Lucy's", "Bottoms Up" or "Dick's Cabaret". On the back of the business card write a name like "Jazmine", "Cherry" or "Franchesca" with a heart next to the name. No phone number is required.
Wives and girlfriends never have an understanding reaction that their man has been set up by his insensitive colleagues.
HINT-- It works even better with lesbians...
(5) Plaque Substitution. The bigger and more self-important the boss, the more crap that hangs on their "I love me wall". Select a plaque and order a substitute. Replace the name of the recipient with their name and the caveat "Class Asshole" or similar underneath. Hang it in place of the original. The office owner won't notice it -- but somebody else is bound to. And it's fun. Eventually you can replace the original, when you're in the mood.

Nobody is more uptight than IBM executives. They are
all ripe for this sort of treatment and it's effectiveness has
been proven in actual field testing.
(6) IBM Panic. It works for other organizations, but it worked particularly well in the past when exacting a measure of satisfaction from IBM. Parking places are a mark of your place in the pecking order. An unannounced change in parking place drives knives of panic into the most hardened bureaucrat. A confederate in parking security is required, but those people are always dumped on, so they're almost always thrilled to delete the security camera footage.

Rearrange parking placards over a holiday weekend, make some new ones announcing promotions and change the names on the top few slots. You're going to have to go to the bother of generating half a dozen new placards - along with moving another dozen around, but the results are worth the trouble.

None of these practical jokes reflect professional decorum or the somber plodding required in a bureaucratic office environment. Then again, if you were one of THOSE PEOPLE, it's unlikely that you'd ever read this blog.

Gun Free Zones - The New Standard of Safety!

It's time to review how those gun-free zone declarations have worked out.

The British crown did their best to enforce a gun free zone and sent redcoats from house to house to disarm their own subjects but because it didn't work, we are here. I do realize that many progressive Americans feel that it would be better if we were still ruled from London by a British Parliament that could levy taxes without representation the parliament -- but it's history.
James Madison wrote it this way: "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed, and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms, shall be compelled to render military service in person." It's clear from reading Madison that the intent was that the American people had a right to arm themselves. This in the face of the "gun free zones" that the British had thought to enforce.

After that paragon of progressivism, The Journal News, published the addresses of every legal firearm owner within their circulation area (they didn't have the information on the hoard of armed criminals), even the ultra uber leftist New York State Legislature passed a law in record time forbidding news organizations from doing it in the future. Apparently the district attorneys, judges, members of the legislature and police officers were uncomfortable with it. It would seem that the unarmed executives at the Journal News are also uncomfortable with proclaiming their homes to be gun free zones. (see below) The question is WHY? I'm sure that they have no fear of judges and police officers who are the  sort of people impacted by limiting lawful firearms ownership.

The Duffle Blog weighs in on a 'gun free zone' declared in Afghanistan.
(h/t The Duffle Blog) KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Following the latest green-on-blue attacks, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has formally announced today that the entire nation of Afghanistan had been declared a gun-free zone.

“After over thirty years of senseless violence, I think it’s time we say no to big guns and the firearms industry that promotes them,” a tearful and visibly-tired Karzai told a crowd of Afghan legislators at the presidential palace in Kabul.
Under the new government-approved policy, no one will be allowed to carry any type of firearm or ranged weapon in Afghanistan. Swords and knives are still permissible, as long as the owner possesses a Class-III license available at most government offices.
There were concerns that many residents in this nation of firearms enthusiasts, widely described as “the freest people in the world”, would ignore the edict. This is a country where guns outnumber people 14:1 and actually have more civil rights than them. Many people proudly sport jalabiyas bearing the slogan “Live free or die”. Last year a DShK heavy machine gun was elected to parliament. And the national motto can be roughly translated as ‘A man should purchase a gun instead of a wife, because at least if someone looks at his gun he won’t have to take it out back and crush it with a heavy rock’.
Several gun collection centers have been set up around the country under the leadership of female Afghan General Khatol Mohammad Zai, prompting a group of elderly mujahideen to release a statment saying: “I am a mujahideen veteran of 30 years, and I will not have some woman who proclaims the evil of an inanimate object, yet carries one, tell me that I may not have one.”
However following the announcement, many citizens rushed to turn in the millions of pistols, shotguns, rifles, belt-fed machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and anti-aircraft weaponry possessed by their families for generations.
“We’re losing such a valuable part of our national identity,” sobbed farmer Haji Hayatullah as he drove his 438 firearms to the police station in the family tank. “My AK-47 has over thirty notches for every man it’s killed, and seventy half-notches for each woman and child.”
Initially there was some hope that the edict would not affect the 130,000 ISAF/NATO soldiers serving throughout the country because the edict only affects men and women. Under the Afghan constitution, ISAF soldiers are not considered human
However ISAF spokesman Major Kimberly Ash said the International Security Assistance Force would also comply with the law and that all future patrols would be limited to bayonets and sharp pointed sticks.
Surprisingly, Karzai’s decision has also been praised by his opponents in the Taliban. “Under Islamic traditions, firearms are considered bid’ah, or innovations,” said Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Omar. “The Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, never used a Soviet SKS semi-automatic rifle, a pressure plate IED, or a 107-millimeter rocket.”
Mullah Omar added, “We are pleased that the infidel puppet Karzai has recognized this and we look forward to riding up to his palace on horseback and beheading him with a proper Islamic sword.”
