The Story

I first heard the Frozen Bird story when I was in the Navy, undergoing arduous training. The saga runs like this:

A little bird was flying south for the Winter. It was so cold that the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While he lay there, near death there, a cow came by and dropped a large pile of dung on him, warming him and saving his life.

As life coursed back into his little feathered body, he realized that he was covered by dung, repellant and odorous. He started chirping and complaining.

A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

There are lessons that can be drawn from this:

(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
(3) When you are in deep dung, best to keep your mouth shut.
