Your Covered California Update

Maryland signs up 100 welfare recipients in the first week of ObamaCare open enrollment.

Covered California is the portal for ObamaCare in California. When you click on the link to sign up, the link doesn't work. It's broken. A metaphor? No, I don't intend to sign up for ObamaCare. However, even if I tried, I couldn't.

It did offer me some hope. The co-pay for the Bronze Coverage Plan is $6350.00 and the family maximum is $12,700. That means that instead of current coverage under Medi-Cal, which has no co-pay and free coverage, I'd only be on the hook for $12,700 if I'm poor -- and $236 per month. Which means that I go from 0/0 to $2,832 per year in premiums and a $12,700 co-pay. And I don't get to keep my current doctor. It's no wonder that nobody is signing up. The poor will want to keep their present deal...but that's not happening.

How long did the Obama Administration have to put this together? You could have assigned gerbils to do the work and it would have been done better -- and from what I've seen, the poor won't want it any more than anybody else would.

There is one class of people who will likely sign up. "The uninsurable." It’s entirely possible that the only people signing up are the people who can’t buy normal insurance. If that’s the case, this system is doomed and will require an immediate taxpayer subsidy to stay in operation.

Without a flood of young and healthy people who never visit the doctor and simply pay high premiums, the system will fold within 2014 -- and either Congress votes a massive subsidy or it becomes Obama's Folly.

The Democrats better hope that they win the House in 2014.
